Beyond the Moving and Storage Estimate

Beyond the Moving and Storage Estimate

Choosing a Reputable and Reliable Company

When the time comes for you to choose a moving and storage company, it is likely that your initial research will be done online. With that being said, however, you should never book a move solely by the price given only online or over the phone. Many consumer groups and organizations suggest you receive at least three written estimates from three different companies before you make a decision on a provider of moving or storage services. Aside from researching online and getting written estimates, asking friends and family for referrals is a great way to get started. Conducting a simple search will provide you with a list of companies to consider for your upcoming needs. Reputation and past experience have a lot of influence on the decision making process.

Reputation and Certifications

The vast majority of transactions in the moving and storage industry go smoothly, however accidents happen, and there are a "few bad eggs" out there that spoil the reputation of the otherwise reputable movers.

Schedule Appointments

It's wise, especially for the first-time-mover, to "shop around" when looking for a reputable moving and storage company. Keep in mind that although there are many estimating tools online for moving and storage services, you should never accept an estimate until a representative from the company has been to your home and surveyed the goods you wish to move and/or store. An on-site estimate allows the moving consultant to complete a realistic assessment of all the goods and whether or not there are extra costs involved beyond what could easily be discussed over the phone or online.

Valuation Coverage

Whether or not your upcoming move is local, intrastate, or across state lines may affect the type of estimate you receive. In addition, local jurisdiction may affect the type of estimate given and valuation coverage that is included within your estimate. Consumers often refer to valuation coverage as "insurance," however there are major differences that will be covered in a future article or you may read about additional specifics provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Finances

After the onsite appointment, you will be presented with a cost to move and/or store your goods. It is, however, important to know that, depending on the type of estimate you are provided, the actual charges can be more than those with which you were initially told. Be sure to ask your professional Moving Consultant to further explain the estimate you receive. This is a very important factor, as it removes the chance for any unpleasant financial surprises to arise. Speaking of finances, the more packing you do yourself, the less stuff you move, the more money you will save upfront. Charges are based on weight and distance or quantity of movers and how many hours the moving takes. Storage fees are based on amount and duration. Of course when it comes to damaging your goods because of a bad packing job, you may end up costing yourself dearly. Packing the items yourself versus paying the movers to do the packing will also be a determining factor of how the valuation coverage applies.

Consideration and Evaluation

Written estimates allow you to compare offers from different moving companies. You may find a very reputable and professional moving company with your first phone call or internet search, but it is always a good idea to make sure you have chosen the best option from those that are available to you. Just because a company has an appealing website, for example, does not necessarily mean that the company is reputable. Be sure to do your research, check the company reviews on various consumer sites, and get all verbal promises in writing.

Budgeting For Moving And Relocation

Budgeting For Moving And Relocation

Recently Barbie and Ken (not their real names) moved a few thousand feet, across a courtyard. They traded up from a one-bedroom apartment to a two-bedroom apartment. They were amazed by four things: how much stuff they had in their old apartment, how much stuff they needed for their new apartment, how much stuff from their old apartment they were sorry they brought to their new apartment, and how long the process took from first piece packed to last piece put away. They were not alone in their amazement.

The Survey Says

“Based on research and surveys that we've conducted, we’ve found that, on average, a homeowner spends $9,400 in the three months it takes them to move. That doesn’t include the cost of the new home or the moving company,” says Jeff Lippincott, Business Development Manager of MoveCentral, Inc. “Renters are spending, on average, $3,700 when they move. In either case it would take most people three to five years to spend that much on home related goods if they weren’t moving.”

“Most moves are triggered by a life event such as a new job, a marriage, a baby, a divorce, or a retirement. Some of these life events come with additional income or needs. We found that 37% of households that move purchase new furniture within 12 weeks of their move, 40% buy bedding, and 12% buy a new computer within 8 weeks of their move,” says Lippincott. “When you buy a new couch, an appliance, and a computer, the costs can mount up pretty quickly. If you have this information beforehand, you can plan and add this to your family budget accordingly.”

Here are some more of MoveCentral’s surprising survey results:

57% of homeowners and 37% of renters bought furniture within 12 weeks of their move. Homeowners spent an average of $3,500 and renters spent an average of $1,220.

35% of homeowners and 40% of renters purchased bedding within three weeks of their move. Homeowners spent an average of $420 and renters spent an average of $240.

15% of homeowners and 12% of renters bought a computer within eight weeks of their move. Homeowners spent an average of $2,160 and renters spent an average of $1,340.

55% of households (homeowners and renters) purchased at least one appliance when they moved.

12% of all respondents with internet access went online to research moving companies.

It’s a Moving Experience

“Since most people are paying the movers themselves (as opposed to a corporate sponsored move), I suggest that they get three competitive quotes,” Says D’Arcy Goldman, President of Humboldt Storage and Moving, in Camden, Mass. ”Moving costs are based on the total weight of the goods you’re moving and the miles you’re moving them. It’s a very competitive industry and it’s hard to get a quote with the true financial cost of the move. You want your mover to give you a good price and reliable referrals, so that you can rest assured that they will get the job done properly.”

“It’s very important that you take advantage of an estimator’s expertise,” says Goldman. “Show them everything, even if you think it might not be going. Don’t say ‘I’m going to have a tag sale and I’m sure that old piano won’t be going with us.’ It’s safer to estimate higher and end up lower. The moving company can always give you less space on moving day, but sometimes it can be hard to give you more.”

Advice from your mother

Now that you’ve heard from the professionals, make sure you follow these two pieces of age-old, maternal moving wisdom. Regardless of how much you choose to unpack that first day (or night), set up your bathroom first and make up your bed second. That way you can answer nature's call, take a hot shower, and your bed will be there to catch you when you fall.
